ABOUT ME, JASMINE BROWN
Nice to meet you, my name is Jasmine Brown.
I’m a single blind mom of two girls, Olivia and Saya.
Olivia and I were born in Texas, and Saya was born in Nebraska. We’ve lived here in Nebraska from 2019 till present. I’ve been blind all my life, and both kids are fully sighted. We have a Carolina Dog mixed with American Dingo, and her name is “dog”. I grew up with my mom and my twin brother, and they always had to describe everything they saw to me in graphic detail, but even with the knowledge of my disability and having to do that, they still treated me as if I could see, because I could, through them. This is relevant because now I find myself feeling the need to do the same with my girls, even though they are looking right at what I’m describing. My disability and my kids are the inspiration behind this hub of information.
I have learned a lot in the past five years as a parent, and I’m here to share with you all, the biggest secret to my success in educating my children, and why they pass most academic and developmental tests with flying colors.
It’s all in the name: “Play-Learn”. We play all the time, but I’m teaching them loads of skills without them realizing it.
Some of them include, but are not limited to:
- fine motor,
- language,
- social-emotional,
- memorization,
- mathematics,
- problem solving,
- resourcefulness,
- interpersonal,
- mannerisms,
- reading and writing,
- censorial,
- and so much more.
I hope you’ll come aboard, and learn and play with uss too.
WHY THE BIG REVEAL?
Have you ever done something that made you so proud, you wanted to teach it to someone else, so that they could do it for themselves and feel proud of what they’ve done too? I have. And thus “Play-Learn”. I learned what different colors are by name and shade, and ordinary objects, like fruits and vegetables, I have memorized their color by association. This, along with certain apps on my phone, and the help of nearby family and friends, helps me teach my children color without being able to see it. With that said, I have found different products online that are kid friendly that I can just take it out of the box and be able to play with it with them, but secretly teach them things like colors and numbers and so on without being able to see any of it like they can. When they ask me how I know the banana is yellow, I tell them it’s mommy magic, and when they are old enough to understand, I will explain more truthfully.
So, this is why I want to share with you all, how I utilize play time as an educational resource, allowing for extended fun (happier kids), and early education intervention (healthier kids).
All work and no play is no more. Let the fun and wellness begin. Immerse yourself into the Play-Learn experience, and learn all the finer details of my secrets to happy and healthy kids.
WE’RE ON A MISSION! WHAT IS IT?
Play-Learn’s main mission is to have fun while educating you on how to do the same with your children. Although, subliminally, I will be teaching you also how to do it alternatively without sight. But don’t worry, we’re not exclusively educating the blind and visually impaired, I personally believe all those that can see will learn just as much here, if not more.
So, let’s take this one adventure at a time, and provide all parents and guardians, teachers and sitters, and anyone else who are involved in the lives of tiny humans, with the magic of endless education through endless play.
Do you have questions? Do you wish to help Play-Learn expand it’s learning opportunities and resources? Or do you just need a place to testify to the effect Play-Learn has had on you or your tiny human(‘s) life? I’m here, holding out a helping hand.
I wish you all an awesome fun-filled education,
Jasmine Brown
